(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - Kyle Taketa (Torrance, Calif. / Gardena Judo) fell just one match win short of the medal hunt on Friday when he went 2-1 in the 66kg division of the Junior World Championships in Paris.

Taketa and 2007 European Cadet silver medalist Zviad Kapanadze (GEO) fought through the four-minute regulation and two-minute Golden Score (overtime) periods without a score in the first round, but the win was awarded to Taketa by referee decision.

In the second round, Taketa went to Golden Score again, this time defeating Lwilli Santana (DOM) by two penalties.

Taketa needed one more win to advance to the quarter-finals and be in contention for a medal, but in the third round he was thrown by Golan Pollack (ISR) with an uchimata (inner thigh throw) for a yuko (quarter-point) score and pinned for ippon (instant win).

A fifth-place finisher at the 2006 Junior World Championships as a 48kg player, Jeanette Rodriguez (Davie, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami) competed in her second Junior Worlds on Friday.  Now a 52kg player, Rodriguez threw Achurra Belen (CHI) for ippon 25 seconds into the first round.

In the second round, Rodriguez was armbarred by 2008 Junior World medalist Barbara Maros (HUN).

Rodriguez was one of three players from the USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami who competed on Friday.

A 2009 Senior Pan Am Team member, Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla.) threw Sophio Beridze (GEO) with a harai goshi (hip throw) for ippon during Golden Score in the first round of the 57kg division.

Delgado was down by two penalties in the second round when Tina Trstenjak (SLO) pinned her for the win.  Trstenjak went on to win her second Junior World bronze medal later in the day.
