Team USA at the Kata World Championships
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - Fifteen U.S. athletes competed in the first ever Kata World Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Valletta, Malta.
Kata is a forms-based judo discipline in which two athletes perform a set routine of judo techniques which are then scored by a panel of judges.
Doug Tono (Chicago, Ill. / Tohkon Judo) and Andrzej Danjowski (Oak Brook, Ill. / Tohkon Judo) had the best showing for Team USA, placing fifth in their grouping of the Kodokan Goshin Jitsu kata. The two narrowly missed advancing to the finals by 16 points as only the top three teams from each of two groups per kata advanced to the evening finals where the medalists were selected.
Heiko Rommelmann (Webster, N.Y. / Bushido Kai Judo Club) and Mark Chast (Churchville, N.Y. / Bushido Kai Judo Club) also fared well, placing sixth in the preliminaries of the judo show division; however, only the top three teams in single group of competitors advanced to the evening final. A new event, the judo show included teams of between two and six athletes performed a fight simulation containing techniques of judo and self-defense. The shows will be choreographed individually and included music as well.
