(Miami, Fla.) – Hana Carmichael (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) returned home to Miami to win her first U.S. Open title on Sunday.
A native of Wellington, Fla., Carmichael moved to suburban Massachusetts two years ago to train with two-time Olympic medalist Jimmy Pedro (Methuen, Mass.) at his USA Judo National Team FORCE program.
This week, Carmichael came back to Miami to compete in both the USA World Cup on Friday and the U.S. Open on Sunday at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa.
Although Carmichael did not place at the USA World Cup in her 57kg division, she did win her first U.S. Open title with a finals win against 2008 Senior Pan American silver medalist Yadinys Amaris (COL).
Carmichael threw Amaris with a drop sode (dropping sleeve throw) for a waza-ari (half-point) score and a harai goshi (hip throw) for ippon (instant win).
Carmichael celebrated the win with her friends and family who came out to the event to cheer her on.
“Everybody came out. Orly [Fuentes], my first coach Evelio [Garcia], all the older players from my first club, Budokan. It was awesome,” she said. “It feels great to win on my home turf.”
The win comes in Carmichael’s last tournament before she leaves for the Senior World Championships in Tokyo next week.
“I’m really excited. I’m very anxious, but now that I’ve seen the athlete list, I can’t wait to see the draws,” she said.
Carmichael was one of six U.S. players to win gold medals and 13 to advance to the finals.
In the 52kg division, Jeanette Rodriguez (Davie, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at South Florida) followed her USA World Cup win on Saturday with her third career gold medal at the U.S. Open. Rodriguez won her first three matches in the 18-player division and then earned the gold when she threw six-time World Cup medalist Marie Muller (LUX) for ippon.
Kayla Harrison (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) also added a U.S. Open gold medal to her USA World Cup title when she won the 78kg division. Harrison won each of her opening matches by ippon to advance to the final where she threw Yacintha Nguyen-Huu (CAN) for four yuko scores (quarter-point each) before pinning Nguyen-Huu to end the match.
In their third finals match this year, Nick Delpopolo (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) and Michael Eldred (Fruitland, Idaho / Western Idaho Judo Institute) fought for gold in the 73kg division.
After first-round byes, both players each won four matches to advance to the final where Delpopolo threw Eldred for ippon in the first minute of the match.
In the 63kg division, Christal Ransom (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) won her first Senior National title in May and added her first U.S. Open gold medal on Sunday when she defeated Katherine Campos (BRA) by penalties.
Leyen Zulueta (Dayton, Ohio / Kettering Rec Center Judo Club) won the +78kg division where she defeated Melissa Mojica (PUR) in the finals.
