Team USA Roster Finalized for USA World Cup in Miami, Tournament Begins Friday

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – USA Judo is pleased to announce that 53 athletes have been named to the team that will compete at the USA World Cup at the Doral Resort and Spa in Doral, Fla. from Aug. 27-28. 

Featuring four athletes in nearly all of the 14 Olympic weight divisions, Team USA will compete against athletes from 30 nations in the first World Cup event ever held on U.S. soil.

A qualifier for the 2012 Olympic Games and the final major international event before the Senior World Championships that will be held Sept. 9-13 in Tokyo, this event will draw athletes from nations including Brazil, Korea, Ukraine, Canada, Portugal, France, Australia and Colombia.

Team USA earned 18 medals during its last World Tour outing at the El Salvador World Cup in June and is hoping to build on that momentum in Miami

Among the U.S. athletes competing are six-time World Cup medalist Kayla Harrison (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE / 78kg), 2008 Olympian and four-time World Cup medalist Travis Stevens (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE / 81kg); four-time World Cup medalist Michael Eldred (Fruitland, Idaho / Western Idaho Judo Institute / 73kg); and three-time World Cup medalist Marti Malloy (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University / 57kg)

Team USA also includes 16-year-old Katelyn Bouyssou (Hope, R.I. / NYAC / Mayo Quanchi Judo Club / 48kg) who returned to the United States on Wednesday after winning gold at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore on Sunday. 

Five athletes from throughout South Florida will have the rare opportunity to compete at a World Cup event in front of a hometown crowd.  These athletes include: 

  • Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at South Florida / 52kg), 2010 El Salvador World Cup medalist
  • Jeanette Rodriguez (Davie, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at South Florida / 52kg), two-time Pan American medalist
  • Andrew Porras (Hialeah, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at South Florida / 73kg), 2009 U.S. Open medalist
  • Laquinta Allen (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla. / Onikusu Judo / 70kg), 2010 Senior Nationals medalist
  • Jonathan Fernandez (Miami, Fla. / Baraqua Judo Kai / 81kg), 2010 National President’s Cup Champion

In addition, two athletes who hail from South Florida will be returning home for the event.  

A bronze medalist at the El Salvador World Cup, Hana Carmichael (57kg) grew up in Wellington and now trains in Wakefield, Mass. with the USA Judo National Team FORCE program.  

Thirty-year-old Jose Bencosme (81kg) moved from Miami to San Jose, Calif. after high school to compete for San Jose State University.  Now an assistant coach at SJSU, Bencosme won the U.S. Open in 2009 and is making a bid to qualify for the 2012 Games.
