Michael Eldred, 73kg

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Two-time Senior World Team member Michael Eldred (Fruitland, Idaho / Western Idaho Judo Institute) won his fourth career World Cup medal in the 73kg division on Saturday at the Chinggis Khan World Cup in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

After a first-round bye, Eldred trailed Yerzman Abdullayev (KAZ) by an early yuko (quarter-point) score.  Late in the first minute, however, Eldred came back and pinned Abdullayev to win the match.

In the quarter-finals, Eldred threw Odbayar Ganbaatar (MGL) for ippon (instant win) midway through the match, but the call was changed to a waza-ari (half point) score and the match continued.  Eldred was given two penalties in the final two minutes of the match and needed to keep attacking to avoid earning a third that would tie the score.  With 16 seconds on the clock, Eldred pinned Ganbaatar for the win.

Competing in his second career World Cup final against his third Mongolian player of the day, Eldred was scoreless against Purevdorj Ganbold during their five-minute match and the fight went into Golden Score.  When neither player scored in the overtime period, Ganbold won the match by referees’ decision in front of his hometown crowd.

Two-time World Cup medalist Nick Delpopolo (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) also competed in the event and placed seventh in the 73kg division.

Delpopolo had a first-round bye and a second-round win over Gejirihu De (CHN).  In the quarter-finals, Delpopolo also went to Golden Score against Ganbold who threw the Senior World Team member for ippon.

Delpopolo dropped down to the repechage where he lost by ippon to 2008 Junior World Champion Won-Jung Kim (KOR).
