(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Eighty athletes competed in the senior elite divisions of the Northglenn Championships on Saturday in Broomfield, Colo.

A USA Judo Senior E-Level Point Tournament, the Northglenn Championships was the last opportunity for athletes to earn points towards seeding at the USA Judo Senior National Championships, May 1-2 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Alexa Liddie (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) was named the Female Outstanding Competitor of the event.  A week after winning bronze in the 44kg division at the Senior Pan American Championships, she moved up to 48kg to win the gold.

Liddie threw #4-ranked Veronica Prado (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at South Florida) for ippon (instant win) and followed the win by throwing Nadine Encarnacion (Bothell, Wash. / Budokan Judo) to win their Golden Score (overtime) match.  Encarnacion earned the silver medal after choking Prado to win their match.

George Truong (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Ju Shin Kan), a 2009 Cadet World Team member in the 55kg division, was named the Male Outstanding Competitor of the event after winning his first senior tournament at 60kg. Truong defeated two-time Blind World Team member Ron Hawthorne (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) and Ladasua Jawam (St. Paul, Minn. / Doc's Gym) in the first two rounds.  In the final Truong defeated Corwin Learned (El Granada, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University), a former 55kg player who medaled at the 2008 Senior Nationals and placed in the top seven at the 2009 Junior Worlds.

A former Senior Pan Am Team member in the 52kg division, Anna Palmer (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) won the 63kg division with three ippons.  Palmer earned wins over her OTC teammate Christal Ransom (Colorado Springs, Colo.), a 2009 Senior Pan Am Team member, as well as Ruth Thompson (Poway, Calif. / Kokusai Budokan) and Kayla Chappell (Oklahoma City, Okla. / USA Stars), a 2009 Senior World Team member at 52kg.  Ransom defeated Thompson and Chappell by ippon to place second while Thompson earned the bronze after coming from behind to throw Chappell for ippon.

The reigning National Champion in the 90kg division, Aaron Cohen (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / NYAC / Cohen’s Judo) got a preview of what could be a semifinal match-up at the Senior Nationals when he met #2-ranked Jake Larsen (Lafayette, Colo. / Team FORCE / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) in the finals.  Cohen threw Larsen with a sode (sleeve throw) to win the gold medal.

A former #1 in the 66kg, Kenny Hashimoto (Thornton, Colo. / Northglenn Judo Club) went 3-0 to win the division.  Although Hashimoto just returned to competition in August after sustaining what many thought would be a career-ending injury before the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Judo, Hashimoto has yet to be defeated by a U.S. player in the division.

Landry Ryan (Forth Worth, Texas / Ruben Martin Judo), a former #1 in the 90kg division, has since moved up to 100kg where he went 3-0 to win the gold in Broomfield.

Ryan also won gold in the Open weight division where he countered 2008 Olympian Ryan Reser (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) to win their match by ippon.
