(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Nearly 600 athletes competed at the Liberty Bell Classic, a USA Judo Senior E-Level Point Tournament, in Bryn Athyn, Pa. on Sunday.

In the day’s largest and most exciting division, 20 athletes fought for gold at 73kg.

In preparation for the USA Judo Senior Nationals next month, former top-ranked 66kg player and 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Alternate Kenny Hashimoto (Thornton, Colo. / Northglenn Judo) fought up to 73kg for the event.  Hashimoto won his first four matches to advance to the finals against two-time Senior Nationals silver medalist Nick Delpopolo (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE), counting victories against 2009 Canadian World Team member Michal Popiel (CAN) and fifth-ranked 73kg player Alfred Raymond (Scituate, R.I. / Mayo Quanchi Judo Club) among his victories.

In the finals, Delpopolo defeated Hashimoto by ippon (instant win).  Meanwhile, Popiel fought his way through the repechage to meet Hashimoto again.  This time Popiel took the win by referee’s decision in Golden Score (overtime).

Katelyn Bouyssou (Hope, R.I. / NYAC / Mayo Quanchi Judo Club), the reigning Senior National Champion at 48kg, fought up to 52kg to win her second senior event this season at the heavier weight after earning gold at Pedro’s Challenge in February.

A 2008 Pan Am Team member in the 52kg division, Anna Palmer (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) fought up to win the 63kg division.  Palmer’s OTC teammate Christal Ransom (Colorado Springs, Colo.), a 2009 Senior Pan Am Team member, placed second in the division after being armbarred by junior Ruth Thompson (Poway, Calif. / Kokusai).  Ransom came back in the repechage to throw Thompson for ippon.

In the 70kg division, Emilie-Claude Leroux (CAN), a former Canadian Pan Am Team member in the 63kg division defeated 2009 Senior Nationals medalist Samantha Bleier (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) to win the gold.  But the surprise of the day came when unranked Angela Marino (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) threw 2009 Senior Nationals medalist Laquinta Allen (Lauderdale Lakes, Onikusu) for ippon en route to winning the bronze medal.

On the men’s side, 2004 U.S. Olympic Team alternate Mark Fletcher (Atlanta, Ga. / Taico Maf) found himself winning a new division when he earned a gold medal in the +100kg division.

For the first time ever, the Liberty Bell Classic also included divisions for visually impaired players.  World Team members Joshua Farra (Coatesville, Pa. / Liberty Bell Judo), Greg Dewall (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) and Katie Davis (Sacramento, Calif. / Team Sacramento) earned gold medals in the 66kg, 90kg and 78kg divisions, respectively.
