(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Three members of the Team USA competed at the International Blind Sports Association World Championships in Antalya, Turkey on Friday, but none advanced to the medal rounds.

Beijing Paralympian Jordan Mouton (Houston, Texas / Diamondback Judo) had a difficult draw in the 63kg division with three of the four eventual medalists coming from her side of the bracket.  In the first round, Mouton fought Daniele Silva (BRA).  Mouton looked strong in the first two minutes until Silva caught her in an armbar. Silva advanced through to the semifinals en route to winning her bronze medal and carried Mouton through to a repechage match against Dalidaivis Rodriguez (CUB).  Despite a badly strained elbow from the armbar in her first match, Mouton fought the full five minutes with the Cuban, but lost by a waza ari (half-point) and two yuko scores while Rodriguez went on to win the bronze.

First-time World team member Adnan Gutic (St. Louis, Mo. / White Dragon Judo) drew Daniel Powell (GBR) in the first round of the 73kg division; however, shortly before competition began, Powell withdrew from the event.  Gutic advanced to the second round, where he faced eventual bronze medalist Natig Novruzzade (AZE).  Novrussade was strong on the grips and threw Adnan with a drop seoi nage (dropping shoulder throw) in the second minute.  Novrussade lost in the third round to Mohmmadali Shanini (IRI), knocking Gutic out of the tournament.

Competing in his first tournament against visually impaired players, Nathaniel Fodrea (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Judan Judo), drew Jose Effron (ARG) after a first round bye in the 81kg division.  Fodrea was looking strong before the more experienced Effron threw him for ippon (instant win) with a seoi nage (shoulder throw).  Effron advanced to the semifinals and Nathaniel was pulled into the repechage where he faced Minwoo Lee (KOR).  Lee footswept Fodrea for ippon, eliminating Fodrea.

On Saturday, five divisions will be contested.

Myles Porter (Colorado Springs, Colo. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center), a fifth-place finisher at the 2008 Paralympic Games will face Hector Espinoza (VEN) in the first round of the 100kg division.

Greg DeWall (Colorado Springs, Colo. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center), a 2008 Paralympic medalist at +100kg, will make his World Championships debut at 90kg. DeWall has a first round bye and will face Naser Abelhadi (ALG) in the second round.

A fifth-place finisher at the 2007 world Championships at 63kg, Christella Garcia (Sacramento, Calif. / Sacramento Judo) will face Olga Zabrodskaya (RUS) in the first round of the 70kg division.
