West Point and San Jose State University Win Team Titles at Collegiate Nationals

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - The rivalry between San Jose State University and the United States Military Academy continued on Saturday as these teams battled athletes from 24 other universities for titles at the National Collegiate Judo Association Championships at Texas A&M University in College Station. 

The USMA team from West Point earned the men's team trophy with nine medal wins to SJSU's six with Nathan Horswill and Kyle Schlauch leading their team with gold medals in the 66kg and +100kg divisions, respectively.

On the women's side, the USMA earned five medals to SJSU's four, but it was gold medals by Lisette Abad (48kg), Brenna Clark (52kg) and Allison Clifford (San Jose, Calif. / San Jose State University / +78kg) that earned SJSU the team title.

Clifford, the 2009 Senior Nationals silver medalist at 78kg, fought up to the heavyweight division for the event to clinch the win for her team and the award for Outstanding Male Competitor.

Daniel Oshima (Somerville, Mass. / Harvard University), a former highly ranked junior, won both the men's senior 73kg division as well as Outstanding Male Competitor honors.

Competition also was held in novice divisions where the Iowa State University team took home the men's and women's overall team titles, placing first ahead of the USMA in both categories.

LTC Hector Morales (West Point, N.Y.) was named Coach of the Year after leading his USMA team to a combined 20 overall medals between the senior and novice divisions.
