Aaron Cohen World Championship Blog

by Aaron Cohen / August 26, 2009

Five-time Pan American medalist Aaron Cohen will be competing on his third World Team this week.

I knew after I made this World Team in April that Holland was going to put on an amazing World Championships and they did not let anyone down. It seemed like since the time I arrived here everything in this city was judo judo judo. Even when I turned on the TV I saw a documentary on Elco and Dennis Van Der Geest. Even though the show was in Dutch and I didn't understand a word, it was still pretty cool to see it on TV.

I would just like to thank this remarkable coaching staff, managers and trainers that USA Judo has chosen for this year's World Championships. For me it's been a real pleasure to have Jimmy and Ed here. Just about every day I find myself talking to Coach Pedro about how my father was there for him in 1991 and my uncle was there for him in 1999 at the World Championships and it's been a real honor for me to have him here. I keep telling myself I hope I can help Coach Pedro's and Coach Liddie's kids one day when they make the World Championships and be a part of their career... more>

Day 1 in Rotterdam Blog

by Marti Malloy / August 24, 2009

When I first came to Rotterdam a few years ago for a World Cup there were banners all over the city proclaiming it "The Architectural City of the Year."

While the buildings and architecture remain just as stunning and unique as I remember, the banners hanging all over the city, on flag poles, across buildings and on every bus proclaim something different.Something that makes my heart simultaneously race with excitement and swell with pride. The banners advertise the fresh spirited faces of the Dutch Judo Team and welcome all to the Judo World Championships.

Myself, Jeff Fong and our team doctor, Robert Nishime, flew from San Francisco  this morning to Chicago where we met up with Katie Sell,Kayla Chapell and Michael Eldred. There we jumped on a seven and a half hour flight to Amsterdam which, for me, wasn't so bad - especially when you sleep for almost half of it. :) ... more>

Former World Champion Jimmy Pedro to Coach Team USA at the Senior World Championships in Rotterdam this Week

Nicole Jomantas August 23, 2009

Jimmy_pedroTen years after becoming just the third American ever to win a World Championship title, Jimmy Pedro (Methuen, Mass.) will be back at the Worlds - this time as a coach of the 14-member U.S. Team that will compete in Rotterdam, Netherlands from Wednesday through Sunday.

"Having an experienced coach who has competed and won at this level lets the athletes know that it is possible to succeed at the world level in judo and hopefully gives them the confidence to do so themselves," Pedro said.  "Plus, having gone through it first-hand myself for many years, I truly understand the athletes' needs to prepare for such an event, as well as the mental and emotional rollercoaster they will be on for the next few weeks. My key role is to deal with outside influences so they can stay focused on the job they have to do."
