(Myrtle Beach, S.C.) – One might assume that after winning Olympic and World medals, fighting for a sixth Senior National title might be old hat.

“I was a little more nervous than I thought I’d be,” said Ronda Rousey (Santa Monica, Calif. / NYAC) of competing at her first major event since winning bronze at the 2008 Olympic Games.  “I think I had more jitters this time than any other Seniors.”

Rousey fought as an unseeded player for the first time ever at the USA Judo Senior Nationals and World Team Trials on Saturday at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center... more>

Senior National Championships Middle and Heavyweight Preview

Nicole Jomantas April 30, 2010

(Myrtle Beach, S.C.) – Competition begins on Saturday at the USA Judo Senior National Championships with athletes fighting in the men’s and women’s middle and heavyweight divisions in Myrtle Beach.
Preliminary, repechage and bronze medal matches will begin at 9 a.m. at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, 2101 N. Oak Street, and continue until approximately 1 p.m.  Gold medal matches will be contested at 5 p.m.

Divisions to be contested include the men’s 81kg, 90kg, 100kg and +100kg and the women’s 63kg, 70kg, 78kg and +78kg.

The Senior National Championships also will serve as the World Team Trials for athletes seeking to compete at the 2010 Senior World Championships, Sept. 9-13 in Tokyo.

For each division being contested on Saturday, the #1 seeds will automatically be named to the team as the top seeds in each division are mathematically unable to be passed on the USA Judo Senior Elite National Roster.  All top seeds are required to compete at the Nationals, however, in order to be named to the World Team.  If the #1 seed wins the National Championships, the second highest ranked player on the roster, as of the conclusion of the Nationals, will be named to the World Team.

The second slots aren’t a lock for anyone, though, as any player – regardless of seed – who wins the Nationals will be named to the Team.  And everyone – from Olympians to junior players looking for an upset – must compete at the Nationals to be eligible for the World Team... more>
