Aaron Cohen World Championship Blog
by Aaron Cohen / August 26, 2009
Five-time Pan American medalist Aaron Cohen will be competing on his third World Team this week.
I knew after I made this World Team in April that Holland was going to put on an amazing World Championships and they did not let anyone down. It seemed like since the time I arrived here everything in this city was judo judo judo. Even when I turned on the TV I saw a documentary on Elco and Dennis Van Der Geest. Even though the show was in Dutch and I didn't understand a word, it was still pretty cool to see it on TV.
I would just like to thank this remarkable coaching staff, managers and trainers that USA Judo has chosen for this year's World Championships. For me it's been a real pleasure to have Jimmy and Ed here. Just about every day I find myself talking to Coach Pedro about how my father was there for him in 1991 and my uncle was there for him in 1999 at the World Championships and it's been a real honor for me to have him here. I keep telling myself I hope I can help Coach Pedro's and Coach Liddie's kids one day when they make the World Championships and be a part of their career.
On another note, today at the competition it was a really neat set up. The competition hall was just huge and there were vendors on each side selling tons of the judo gear. The warm up area is about 16 full mat areas which is a real pleasure cause I remember in my last World Championships in Egypt I think we had to warm up on carpet. Lol.
When you watch the Super Bowl, World Series or the NBA Championships you notice all the press and TV stations and TV trailers outside the event. Well, walking into this World Championships it feels like being in a World Series or NBA Championships. The press is at every door. You are surrounded by past and present World and Olympic Champions. Kids are inside and out asking for your autograph. It's just something that you will never forget.
Yesterday at lunch I told Katelyn Bouyssou and Kayla Chappell to make sure they take their camera everywhere and if they see someone that they watched on a judo video to ask them to take a picture with them. Then I told them "If you're scared to ask, just come and get me. Everyone knows I am not shy!"
Now it's time to watch a little ESPN so me and Ed have new sports topics to talk about tomorrow on the bus. Good luck to everyone fighting tomorrow!
